Sejarah tidak lupa...

Movie clips from the documentary ‘Sepuluh Tahun Sebelum Merdeka’, by Fahmi Reza.

Please point your browser to http://10tahun.blogspot.com/ to download the full length version.

My 2 cents comment,

After watching this short documentary (about 35 mins long), I believe the overall tone of the movie could only be summarized by these quote from another movie

“…history is written by those who have hanged heroes.” – Braveheart (1995).

#Imagine if today Malaysia is being governed by Perlembagaan Rakyat. All of us (Malay, Chinese and Indian) would be known only as Melayu…#

Along Bukit Beruntung

*dedicated to all the mat ktv melbourne and kl - salam from Karaoke BOX =;)

Rentap!

Could you name the latest historical (event driven or inspired by) movie you’ve watched? I’ll bet the movie revolve around event/ historical fact of some countries with the leading actor/ actresses taking the role of some foreign heroes/leaders/protagonist.

Let revise the question. Could you name the latest historical local movie you’ve watched?

Paloh – Typical malay movie (cengeng+jiwang) with some ass controversy thrown in. Berani tapi boring.

Leftenan Adnan – Excellent historical background. Simbol kejantanan melayu, portrait of the Malay bravery (even if the one we defended is our ‘penjajah’). Menarik even though the delivery is quite dull.

PGL (Puteri Gunung Ledang) – I don’t know if we can categorize this as historical film as it is loosely based on the famous Malay mythology, Hikayat Hang Tuah. Expensive yet the film seems fail to make full use of it potential. However, I’m a sucker for any film that has M.Nasir acting in it (Seniman Jalanan, Fenomena & Merah)… “takkan lembu je, tali mana?”

Any Amir Muhammad movie – Can’t comment cause I’m still searching for the DVDs.

(A little bird told me that next year there would be a film event showing all the latest Malaysian films, banned and commercial alike to Australian public. Special guest would be Yasmin Ahmad and Amir Muhammad. Insya’llah)

How I wish our local film scene could come up with something that is at least at par with the great ‘Bukit Kepong’ movie.

#I remember during my time at MRSM, the warden came and locked us up in our dorm because we did not go to perform our Subuh prayer at the surau. He asked us to come out one by one and surrender. Yang best, one of the guys siap jerit lagi, ala Bukit Kepong, “Kami orang-orang polis tidak akan menyerah diri. Biar kami mati di sini. Bukit Kepong menjadi tanah kubur kami"… hehehe… cukup kuat influence movie tu. =;)#

Sometimes, me and my brother, we discuss and fantasize about the possibility of creating the next ‘Bukit Kepong’. Our idea is basically loosely based on the historical fight between the great Sarawak (Dayak Iban) warrior, Rentap and the British Empire. Cuba you all bayangkan, (just a bit of the screenplay)

Location:

Sungai Rajang. Hutan tebal. Pokok- pokok besar and a bit scarry, kiri dan kanan tebing.

Time:

Early subuh or maybe dekat senja. Sunyi, with a little bit of bunyi mergastua. Cahaya samar- samar. Sungai tenang. Kabus sikit.

Action:

Suddenly, the silence is interrupted with the sound of shooting and shouting. 5 – 6 sampan orang Dayak Iban (Rentap team) is being chase by the British boats (maybe 7 – 8). Some of Rentap man kena tembak dan jatuh dalam sungai. But Rentap and his man keep on rowing. British a bit overconfident. Tiba- tiba, tali diregangkan di antara Rentap sampans and British boats. The British tak sempat nak elak. Yang sempat tunduk, tunduk. Yang berdiri, jatuh dalam sungai. Together with the tali attack, from both tebing, a sum of 100 Rentap mans stand up and begin attacking the British boats with sumpit and panah. Rentap, turns his sampan and together with the other sampan begin to slaughter the remaining British army. Sungai Rajang mula bermandi darah.

Itu baru sikit. This movie would mainly deals around that troubled period. The guerilla warfare. Fighting in the woods and on water. The warrior lifestyle. The backstabbing, the drama and how at the end, the British Empire manage to defeat him and his loyal tribesman at Bukit Sadok and eventually conquer Sarawak. Based from history, until the day he died, although his attempt was crushed but he died a free man. Interesting right? Imagine seeing Braveheart, but in malay or ibanese.

The one million question would be who will be the director, and who would take the role of the great Rentap? Something for you, the target audience to voice out… =;)

Filem Kita, Wajah Kita.
Please no more Sembilu…

hujan yang turun...

Sepuluh tahun dulu, aku masih ingat…

“A riot is the language of the unheard.”

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”

+Martin Luther King, Jr.+

“Bagaimanakah Melayu abad dua puluh satu
Masihkan tunduk tersipu-sipu ?
Jangan takut melanggar pantang
Jika pantang menghalang kemajuan;
Jangan segan menentang larangan
Jika yakin kepada kebenaran;
Jangan malu mengucapkan keyakinan
Jika percaya kepada keadilan”

cerita dari perut kota kl...

Last few weeks, during my routine skype time, my lil sis asked me to checked out this new tv show being screened on Malaysia local alternative station, 8TV. The title is 'KAMI' - us. My sis said that the show was quite interesting, catchy theme song from 'Meet Uncle Hussain' - Untukmu, young good looking cast (gals and boys) and close-to-the-heart theme.

I've searched it on youtube and managed to watched the whole season #thanx to irienad for the uploads#. My say... WOW!

Let's be frank, I'm not a fan of malay cerekarama, samarinda 50/50 #thumbs up for the story of a woman disown by her family, ventured into business and lastly managed to take over her father's company and teach her deceitful brothers some lesson#. If the story revolve around malay community, the requirements would be

- if 'sedih', the level would be 'sedih tahap dewa' like 'ranjau sepanjang jalan' - extreme sadness
- there must be minah kepo or kaki racun or kaki umpat
- PHD, Perasaan Hasad Dengki
- no one dies except the bad guys - the concept of polis kebal, the theory of magic bullets

So, I watched 'Kami' with this disturbing mindset and... how fast the hours flies. Sedar2, I've reached the end of episode 8 and begin desperately searching for episode 9. To my horror, from my googling, I've read that episode 8 is the season finale and Kami would be made into a movie. Waaaarrrggghhhhh! Tensen, tensen!

The wait, the feel... I'm proud to say that the tension and the restlessness is the same like waiting for the next episode of Heroes to be uploaded #season 2 beginning to 'tangkap'#. Kudos to the director and to the creative team that create 'Kami'.

My only worries is thinking how can they maintain and translate the momentum and the suspense of the tv series into movie. It is not an easy task to migrate a 30++ minutes show into a 1-2 hours movie. But... 'Malaysia Boleh' what.

#tgk suasana gig tu, teringat 95-98... hidup banting!#

siang hilang
ghairah sejuknya tiada haba

tapi
sayang zulaikha bukan tiada makna
cinta rabiah bukan tiada erti

My Sinful Madness

I luv movies... to be truthful, I'M MADLY IN LOVE WITH MOVIES. Any kind of movies. Drama, comedy, rom-com, action, science fiction, foreign, cult, 'jiwang', xxx, etc. =;) My previous fav director, Kevin Smith and Quentin Tarantino. My current fav director (pending approval) is Judd Apatow. My fav movie, hmmm, alot, but the one that inspire and seems to be stuck in my head are the talkative one or the serious one like Clerks (1 & 2), Jackie Brown, Reservoir Dogs and Godfather (all) of course. To me, a great movie constitute excellent acting, excellent script and excellent story. For example, Jersey Girl. Simple and straight forward but acting - A++, script - A++ and story - touching yet comedic (I know the feeling coz I've a daughter).

Being an avid movie addict, I'm proud of my DVD collection. But if you ask around (my wife, my family and friends), they would say it is a waste of good money. What do I care, hehehe... Some are addicted to eating. Some are addicted to gossip. Some are addicted to, God forbid, drugs. Me, well I believe my addiction is healthy, right?

Based from my calculation (2-3 years ago), my DVD collection is nearing the 2000 mark. And that just only the collection I've stored in my hometown. Currently, I'm starting new again, with just around 30++ DVDs. Actually, I'm now living in Melbourne for 2 years and if needed, maybe longer. Here, the DVDs is quite cheap (if you're not doing any currency conversion in your head).Price for an original DVD R4, depends on the movie, normally would go up to 20 dollars. Price for an original DVD R1, normally would go up to 60-70 dollars, depending on where and how you want to buy it. There are 2 shops in Melbourne CBD selling DVD R1. One is called Minotaur (nice selection) and the other is simply The DVD Collection (excellent selection). Both are located on Elizabeth St.

To get DVD R1, the cheapest and sometime the simplest way is to search in on Ebay. Almost all of my DVD R1, I bought it from Ebay. But, the thing that always bother me is the time taken for the DVD to arrive safely in your hands. The waiting... aaarrggghhh! Now, I'm still waiting for my Planet Terror and Clerks X to arrive, and it has been almost 2 weeks.

My current DVDs (Melbourne),
  1. Troy - Director's Cut Boxset (2d)
  2. Sin City - Recut & Extended Boxset (2d)

  30. Romper Stomper
  31. Team America World Police - Uncut, Special Collector's Edition
  32. Malcolm X - Special Edition (2d) R1
  33. Welcome to Death Row
To end, this writing is not to show off or to be 'bongkak' with my little collection. Just to share and hopefully inspire all the DVD aficionados out there to come out of the closet, hehehehe!

Well, maybe 'bongkak' sikit kot =;)

Janji dan Doa

Aku risik ilmu
dan dalam pulau tualang
engkau malu.

Sayang, rusuk ini
gigitnya
ghairah bisik isteri
sebak tangis bayi...

Sayang, tangan ini
kuat menumbuk langit,
tersentak darah dan urat
hidup hati dan kudrat!

Yang Agung,
tidak aku terjah siang dan malam-Mu
kecuali
buat aku gali siapa diri...

Yang Kasih,
tidak aku basah dan kering
kecuali
buat aku cari manis ihsan-Mu...
